Tragedy Strikes RAGBRAI 2025: Two Cyclists Collapse and Die During Annual Ride

The incidents occurred on July 21 and July 22, 2025, marking a somber moment in the history of the beloved cycling tradition.

The first incident took place on July 21, when a 62-year-old cyclist, identified as Mark Spoo from Colorado, collapsed on a route in Jackson County, Minnesota. This year marked the inaugural inclusion of a section in Minnesota, and the local sheriff’s office reported receiving a 911 call at approximately 8:15 a.m. regarding the emergency. Remarkably, within moments of the collapse, the victim was attended to by fellow riders, including a doctor, a surgeon, and a physician’s assistant, all of whom were also participants in RAGBRAI.

Despite receiving immediate medical attention, Spoo was transported to Spirit Lake Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The second incident occurred on July 22 in Estherville, Iowa, where 63-year-old Thomas McCarthy from Florida collapsed while riding. At around 7:40 a.m., the Estherville Police Department received a call reporting a cyclist who was semi-conscious and vomiting. Officers arrived on the scene at South 8th Street and 1st Avenue South, but unfortunately, they could not detect a pulse. CPR was administered, and an automated external defibrillator (AED) was utilized in an effort to revive McCarthy. He was subsequently transported to Avera Holy Family Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“The Estherville Police Department was assisted by several citizens, the Estherville Ambulance Service, and the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office,” stated the police department in their official release.

RAGBRAI Director Anne Lawrie expressed profound sorrow over the loss of both riders. “Despite receiving prompt medical attention on the scene, it is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of two RAGBRAI riders earlier this week. Our sincere thoughts and deepest condolences go out to their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

As the cycling community comes together to mourn the loss of these two dedicated participants, RAGBRAI organizers are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all riders. Medical personnel are stationed along the route, and emergency protocols are in place to respond swiftly to any incidents.

The annual event, which draws thousands of cycling enthusiastsfrom across the nation, continues to promote camaraderie, fitness, and the joy of cycling. However, this year’s events serve as a stark reminder of the importance of health and safety during such physically demanding activities.
