Welsh Gravel Championships Launches This August in Myherin Forest

Beicio Cymru is proud to introduce the first-ever Welsh Gravel Championships, hosted by Gravel Fondo Cymru. An exciting addition to the domestic racing calendar that celebrates one of the fastest-growing disciplines in the sport today.

Welsh Gravel Championships Launches This August in Myherin Forest

Taking place on Saturday 23 August in the stunning surroundings of Myherin Forest, near Pontarfynach, the event promises an exhilarating blend of speed, control, and exploration across Mid Wales’ diverse terrain.

Race Details – What to Expect

Set deep in the Cambrian Mountains, Myherin’s wild and rugged landscape offers the perfect backdrop for high-intensity gravel racing. Riders will tackle a mix of forest roads, dirt tracks and fast descents, linked by sweeping fire roads that cut through some of the most spectacular scenery in Wales.

The Championships will feature:

- 100km route – for Senior Open and Senior Female categories
- 50km route – for Junior Open and Junior Female categories
- 50km non-competitive gran fondo loop – open to all riders wanting to experience the course without racing

This will be the first time a national gravel title is contested in Wales – a key milestone in our mission to support the sport’s growth and showcase that Wales really is Made for Bikes.

Why Gravel, Why Now?

Gravel cycling has evolved into a distinct global discipline, combining the endurance of road cycling with the thrill of off-road adventure. From grassroots events in North America to the UCI Gravel World Championships, the discipline is attracting elite athletes, social riders, and everything in between.

Wales now joins the movement with a championship that reflects the full spirit of gravel riding – inclusive, exciting, and rooted in exploration. With names like Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, Matej Mohoric and Mathieu van der Poel making their mark on the international gravel scene, the sport has truly arrived.

Designed to Be Inclusive

Whether you’re racing for a title or taking part for the experience, the Welsh Gravel Championships are open to all. Riders of all backgrounds are welcome to join the event, but those aiming to compete for a Welsh Championship title must meet the eligibility criteria (read more on eligibility here). Gravel is a discipline that bridges the gap between tarmac and trail – offering challenge and accessibility in equal measure.

One local competitive rider summed it up perfectly, “Gravel fills a nice space between social riding and endurance racing. Promoting off-road events like this could make peloton-style racing feel more accessible to those who don’t want to ride around traffic.”
