The inaugural UCI Gran Fondo Hainan kickstarts this December 12 - 14, 2025.

It will take you around volcanic coasts, through undiscovered rainforests, offering cycling enthusiasts worldwide, a chance to qualify for the 2026 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Niseko, Japan.

Located on the coast of the South China Sea, Hainan, with its unique natural endowments, has become a paradise for cycling, a new tropical dream destination for cyclists.

With an average temperature of 18 - 25C in December, where sunshine mingles with sea breezes, it is hailed as "golden season for cycling".

A true escape from the clutches of winter in the northern hemisphere.

The 90% forest coverage creates a "Natural Oxygen Bar", and the high concentration of negative ions turns every breath into a physical energy boost.

Wuzhishan (Five Fingers Mountain) forms the backbone of the central part of the island, volcanic lava intertwins with hidden rainforests, providing a world-class cycling destination.

2026 World Championships Qualification

The 2025 UCI GFWS Hainan will feature 2 road races and 1 individual time trial. The two road races are divided into a flat stage and a mountain stage, while the individual time trial route is mainly on flat roads.

The champion of each age group in any of the events will pull on the prestigious UCI Rainbow Jersey, and the top 25% of each age group will directly earn a spot in the 2026 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships.

December 12: Stage 1 - 110.80km Flat Stage, Lingao to Danzhou 

Unfolding along Hainan’s unique Coastal Scenic Highway, it passes through the Volcanic Coast National Geopark. The spectacular lava and azure sea will create a stunning visual impact.

Flat roads and crosswinds will make for a tactical challenge showcasing the talemts of Sprinters and Roleurs. It passes the cultural landmarks of Lingao Cape and Longmen Jilang (Dragon Gate Surging Waves).

December 12: Stage 1 - 110.80km Flat Stage, Lingao to Danzhou

December 13: Stage 2 - 19.39km ITT from Yangpu Coastal Cultural Plaza

Riders must power against the wind alone on this time trial stage, which is known as "the ultimate test of power and mental resilience". The enthusiastic cheers of the audience along the way will become riders’ "invisible pacemakers".

December 14: Stage 3 - 81.70km Mountain Stage, Wuzhishan Rainforest Cycling Challenge

This stage adopts the classic climbing route of the Tour of Hainan (UCI 2.Pro), going deep into the hinterland of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, with a total elevation gain of 1,644 meters and the finish line set at the top of Atuo Ridge. A continuous 13.4km climb with an average gradient of 4.1% that serves as the battlefield for climbers.

December 14: Stage 3 - 81.70km Mountain Stage, Wuzhishan Rainforest Cycling Challenge

Along the way, it passes through Li ethnic villages and secret realms of Wuzhi Mountain, with negatively charged ions and cultural heritage providing positive power along the way.

The race route is through breathtaking scenery, from the "geological museum" of the volcanic coast to the "natural oxygen bar" deep in the rainforest, the magnificent landscape of intertwined volcanic rocks and seawater, and the unique style composed of nature and culture – provide a new "tropical postcard" that unfolds every 10 kilometers as you cycle past.

99% of visitors reach Hainan Island by flights. There are 2 airports on Hainan Island, one is in Haikou, the capital city of Hainan Island, the other is in Sanya, the beach destination of Hainan Island.

There are direct flights from many overseas countries to Hainan Island including; China Hong Kong, China Macau, China Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Russia, and London. With the Hainan Visa Waiver Policy, it is now very easy to travel to Hainan Island.

You can also take a ferry from Beihai, Guangzhou, or Hong Kong to Haikou or Sanya on the Island.
