Castillo and Santoyo take Victory at 2025 Belgian Waffle Ride Mexico
3rd edition of the Hell of the South was the largest gravel race in Mexico and the largest prize pool of the 2025 BWR series. November ushered in mild weather and clear skies, Querétaro, Mexico, became a playground for outdoor athletes seeking adventure and challenge.
The most iconic Gravel Unroad event in Mexico took place last weekend with three incredible routes in the state of Querétaro for cyclists on Gravel, MTB and e-Bikes. It was epic ride through the heart of Mexico, fueled by waffles, tacos, tequila, and unforgettable terrain.
The 112 mile Waffle, 62 mile Wafer and 31 mile Wanna entered the stunning Sierra Gorda UNESCO national park, which offered challenging road and gravel cycling routes through rugged mountains and pristine wilderness, through picturesque villages, showcasing colonial architecture and local traditions, providing a true taste of Mexican culture.
Mexican National Road Champion Ulises Castillo (Olinka Specialized) took victory in the men's 112 mile Waffle race. He outsprinted Gerardo Arevalo, the pair going solo from the small breakaway to win in a time of 5:01:35. USA's Ian Boswell was third in a time of 05:04:33.
In the women's Waffle race, Mexican National Road Champion Brenda Santoyo outsprinted Anet Esparza, the pair breaking away from the lead women's group in a time of 6:05:31. Pro Triathlete Sara Roel Lopez was third in a time of 6:16:54.
In the 62 mile Wafer, Gustavo Cisneros was fastest in a time of 3:47:21, ahead of Adeo Castro (3:52:39) in second and Ian Andraca (3:52:57) in third place. In the women's Wafer race, Rachel Fucheck who crashed and injured her knee, was fastest in a time of 4:56:39 ahead of Joanna Salamaga (4:58:48) in second place and Cynthia Sosa (4:59:31) in third place.
In the 31 mile Wanna race, Brunao Marin attacked to solo to the finish in 1:42:00, ahead of Jose Suarez (01:50:57) in second place and Jesus Hernandex(01:54:04) in third place. In the women's Wanna race, Mariana Paredes soloed to the finish in 2:14:43, ahead of Daniela Jimenez (02:24:20) in second and Jhonna Salazar (02:24:20) in third place.
1st Place winners took home $1,400 USD, winner's trophy and BWR Mexico 2025 champion's jersey, 2nd Place $800 USD and second place trophy and 3rd Place $300 USD and third place trophy.
