"Kangaroos wait and hide in the bushes and then they jump out in front of you!"

It's official Kangeroos don't like cyclists either.

Two kangaroos caused a crash on the final stage of the Australian race but if there is anyone who will not find it amusing, it is the UAE Team Emirates - XRG rider Mikkel Berg who has suffered a fracture in the hand.

The unusual incident happened early on in the final stage stage 5 and took down several riders, as two kangaroos first rode beside the peloton, and then onto the road.

Jay Vine, the race leader, went down. His teammate Mikkel Bjerg, road captain after the withdrawal the day before of Jhonatan Narváez and Vegard Stake Laengen, went down with him.

However whilst Vine was able to finish the race and go on to celebrate his second overall win in Australia, Bjerg required a trip to the hospital, reminiscent of his two teammates who suffered the same fate 24 hours prior. Bjerg suffered a hand fracture as a result of the crash.

"Mikkel collided with a kangaroo that ran onto the road." said a staement from UAE Team Emirates - XRG , "He withdrew from the race and was examined by doctors. He has a fracture of the acromioclavicular joint and a fracture of the hand".

"Everyone always asks me what's the most dangerous thing in Australia and I always tell them it's kangaroos because they wait and they hide in the bushes and they jump out at you," race winner Jay Vine said in a post-race interview.

"Point proven today, two of them blasted through the peloton at 50Km/h. One stopped and went left right left right... And I ended up hitting its backside when it was flaying around in the ground. It's one of those things, bad luck, but luckily I'm ok and luckily held on to the jersey".

Vine won the overall classification of the race following his triumph in Uraidla, after his big attack on the climb of the Corkscrew. Jhonatan Narváez followed him that day and the duo were set for overall victory, however the team's second half of the race was struck by a lot of bad luck.
