Shock and Disappointmemnt as the Bovine Classic Gets Downgraded to 5th Hardest Cow-Themed Gravel Fondo in a California Wine Region... (That's Not Called Napa or Sonoma)

In a shocking development that has rocked the very foundations of the gravel cycling world, The Bovine Classic has been officially downgraded to the 5th hardest cow-themed gravel event in a California wine region outside of Napa and Sonoma. The prestigious ranking comes after careful consideration of factors including elevation gain, cow pun density, and post-ride beer quality

"We're devastated, obviously," says Bryan "Bryoncé" Yates, Executive Producer and Hugger-in-Chief of The Bovine Classic, with tongue firmly in cheek. "We'll just have to console ourselves with being named one of Bicycling Magazine's 'Must-Ride Gravel Events for 2025,' along with our exclusive access to private vineyards, 150-year-old ranches, and some of the most stunning terrain in California. It's a real disappointment."

"It's a blow, for sure, but our team is more about the rider experience, and we will wear 5th just as well if not better than we wore 4th. It just sucks because now we have to reprint some banners," adds Carlos Perez of Bike Monkey, production partners of the Bovine Classic.

It's a blow, for sure!

Despite this catastrophic downgrade, The Bovine Classic will stubbornly continue its tradition of offering riders the rare opportunity to pedal through normally-inaccessible properties including Justin Vineyards, Peachy Canyon, J. Dusi, Denner Vineyards, and historic ranch lands held by The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo.

"I guess we'll just have to settle for being the only event that combines world-class gravel riding with access to private vineyards, epic views, and a community that feels more like family than a race," Yates added. "Our condolences to anyone who was hoping for a more hardcore cow-themed experience."

Now in its fourth year, The Bovine Classic has established itself as a destination event that draws riders from across the country to experience the unique terrain and hospitality of the Paso Robles wine region. With multiple route options ranging from the formidable "Big Bovine" to the more approachable "Happy Bovine," the event caters to riders of all abilities who share an appreciation for good gravel, good wine, and terrible cow puns.

The event, which takes place October 25-27, 2025, has built its reputation on community, accessibility, and the kind of memorable experience that keeps riders coming back year after year.

"Some rides are just rides. The Bovine is more like joining a herd," said one returning rider. "Once you've been part of it, you just keep coming back."
