Vingegaard attempted to drop the amateur rider who was following him on a descent. Local rider Pedro García Fernández who was following Vingegaard said the Dane "was going down hill very fast to drop me behind and ended up crashing heavily into the ground".

Another witness said he saw Vingegaard with a bloodied face after hitting the deck.

A Visma-Lease a Bike spokesperson said. "Jonas Vingegaard crashed during training on Monday, fortunately, he is okay and did not sustain any serious injuries. In general, as a team we would like to urge fans on bikes to always put safety first."

"For both your own and others’ wellbeing, please allow riders to train and give them as much space and peace as possible."

Jonas Vingegaard is focussing his Grand Tour ambitions on the Giro d’Italia, starting on May 8th 2026 and the Tour de France, which starts on July 4th 2026, where he will again try to beat defending champion Tadej Pogacar.

The Dane will start his 2026 season at the UAE Tour from February 16th 2026 and the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya from March 23rd, races that will help build his form before May.

Vingegaard's Really Bad Crashes

Jonas Vingegaard has faced significant challenges due to crashes in recent seasons, including a serious incident during the 2024 Tour of the Basque Country and a more recent crash at the 2025 Paris-Nice.
2024 Tour of the Basque Country.

Vingegaard's 2024 season was severely impacted by a crash at the Tour of the Basque Country, which resulted in him spending 12 days in the hospital and undergoing extensive rehabilitation. This incident left him with lingering effects, and he struggled to regain his form for the rest of the season. Despite these challenges, he managed to finish second in the 2024 Tour de France, although he was unable to match the performance of Tadej Pogacar, the eventual winner.

In March 2025, Vingegaard crashed during Stage 5 of the Paris-Nice race. Although he finished the stage, he suffered a contusion on his hand and a cut lip, which forced him to withdraw from the following stage due to a concussion and other symptoms like dizziness and nausea. He reported feeling incredibly tired for several days after the crash, which significantly affected his training and racing schedule.
