Chaos at Unbound 2026 — Storms, Crashes, and a Battle for Survival in the Flint Hills

The 2026 edition of UNBOUND Gravel will be remembered not for tactics, breakaways, or sprint finishes, but for the storm that tore the race apart. What began as a fast, confident roll-out from Emporia turned into a day of survival as torrential overnight rain transformed the Flint Hills into a treacherous landscape of hidden ruts, axle-deep mud, and unpredictable water crossings. Riders expected a hard day. What they got was chaos.

Chaos at Unbound 2026 — Storms, Crashes, and a Battle for Survival in the Flint Hills

A Storm That Changed Everything

Heavy rain hammered the course throughout Friday night, soaking the prairie and turning the opening sectors into a minefield. By sunrise, the famous Kansas gravel had become a patchwork of slick clay, standing water, and deep mud traps that swallowed wheels and snapped derailleurs.

The race was barely underway before the first casualties appeared.

Early Shock: Lachlan Morton Out at Mile 50

One of the biggest pre-race favourites, Lachlan Morton, was riding strongly inside the front chase group when disaster struck just after mile 50. Morton crashed heavily in a muddy, rutted section and was forced to abandon with visible injuries. His exit sent a ripple through the race — a reminder that even the most experienced gravel racers were at the mercy of the conditions.

Bardet Abandons as Conditions Worsen

WorldTour star Romain Bardet, riding Unbound as part of a family trip, was another high-profile DNF. Bardet reached Matfield Green but opted to withdraw as the worsening mud and rain drained both momentum and morale. His departure underscored the brutality of the day: even elite road professionals were struggling to stay upright.

Unbound XL: A Night of Crashes and Hospital Runs

If the 200-mile race was chaotic, the 350-mile Unbound XL was carnage.

Both Peter Stetina and Ted King, two of the most respected names in American gravel, crashed in the dark during the storm. Stetina hit deep mud at speed around 9pm, tearing open his knee. His mechanic drove him straight to the hospital — where he found Ted King already there, having suffered a similar crash and injury.

Two legends of gravel, both ending their races in the ER instead of Emporia.

Race Dynamics Before the Storm Took Over

Before the conditions fully dictated the outcome, the men’s 200-mile race saw a powerful early lead group form, including:

- Cameron Jones (defending champion)
- Thomas De Gendt
- Tobias Kongstad
- Cobe Freeburn
- Keegan Swenson
- Mads Würtz Schmidt
- Matt Beers

Behind them, Morton and Bardet were active in the chase before their exits. The pace was high, the racing aggressive — until the mud began to reshape the field.

A Day of Attrition

The numbers tell the story:

- 133 men started the 200-mile race
- 67 women started
- Dozens of DNFs across both fields
- Crashes, mechanicals, and mud-induced chaos defined the day
- Riders spoke afterward of sections where bikes had to be carried, wheels locked solid with clay, and water crossings that hid deep ruts beneath the surface.

A Race That Will Be Remembered

Unbound has always been unpredictable, but 2026 will go down as one of the most dramatic editions in its history. The storm didn’t just influence the race — it rewrote it. Riders who survived the early chaos found themselves in a war of attrition, where resilience mattered more than power numbers and luck mattered as much as preparation.

For the winners, it was a triumph of grit. For the many who didn’t finish, it was a reminder of why Unbound is the most feared gravel race in the world.

Unbound 2026 wasn’t just a race. It was a battle against the Flint Hills themselves.
