NEW YORK CITY, July 8, 2019 – A challenging but beautiful course, La Fortuna in Costa Rica hosted the start and finish of GFNY Costa Rica.
GFNY Costa Rica was a challenge of elements and diverse terrain. The 150 km Gran Fondo included a 2,714 metre of climb through the stunning Arenal Volcano National reserve. The non-competitive shorter Medio Fondo covered 90 km of the route and 1,476 meters of climbing.
The race started with a 16.8 km ascent towards Lake Arenal dam and from that point riders began an undulating descent into the little town of “Nuevo Arenal”. The undulating course continued on to the city of Tilaran, that signified the half way point.
From Tilaran riders headed towards the city of Canas before turning towards the Tejona windmill energy projects and an uphill windy section before ending the section on technically challenging gravel road.
The Rio Piedras Wall presented the most challenging climb at 15% gradient before heading home back to the La Fortuna, a well-deserved finish line and post-race party Pure Vida style.
Overall for the men, Rom Akerson was fastest in a time of 4h 22m ahead of Ronald Garcia and Frederico Ramirez.
For the women, Natalia Navarro was fastest in a time of 4h 41m ahead of Marcella Rubiano and Cristel Vasquez.
10% of finishers in each age group on the Gran Fondo qualified for the Racer Corral at the 2020 Campagnolo GFNY World Championship in NYC on May 17th 2020.
