American Sepp Kuss wins Vuelta in Jumbo-Visma clean sweep

Sepp Kuss became the first American to win a Grand Tour in 10 years as he sealed Vuelta a Espana victory in Madrid

American Sepp Kuss wins Vuelta in Jumbo-Visma clean sweep

The 29-year-old from Colorado navigated the largely processional 21st and final stage without problems to finish 17 seconds clear at the top of the general classification.

It was a podium clean sweep for Jumbo-Visma, with Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard second and Giro d'Italia champion Primoz Roglic third, as the team became the first to claim all three Grand Tour titles in the same season.

Kuss ends a US wait for a Tour triumph stretching back to Chris Horner's Vuelta success in 2013.

Kuss, 29, crossed the line smiling wide, his position as general classification leader not under threat on stage 21′s flat 101.5 kilometre procession to Madrid.

Danish rider Vingegaard finished second, 17 seconds behind Kuss, who finished the gruelling 21 stage race in 76 hours, 48 minutes and 21 seconds.

Roglic came in third, just over a minute behind Kuss, with Spaniard Juan Ayuso of UAE Team Emirates beating his compatriots Mikel Landa and Enric Mas to fourth.

Ayuso, 21, also claimed the white jersey for best young rider, while Australian Kaden Groves finished with the green jersey for the most points, also winning the final stage after a remarkable bunch sprint.

The concluding stage was won by Australia's Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck), his third stage victory of this year's race, ahead of second-placed Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers), while Nico Denz (Bora-Hansgrohe) came third.
