2025 Vuelta a España rumoured to be heading back to the Alto de l'Angliru

The 80th edition of the race is expected to start in Piemonte region of Italy and will conclude in Madrid, Spain

The 2025 Vuelta a España is set to begin in Italy, a rare departure from its traditional Spanish start. While details are still emerging, reports hint at a spectacular route featuring some of the race's most iconic climbs. According to La Nueva España, race director Javier Guillén recently traveled to the Asturias region to meet with local representatives, confirming plans for two summit finishes.

One of these finishes will be at the legendary Alto de l'Angliru. This climb, steeped in cycling lore, has witnessed countless dramatic moments. The most recent spectacle unfolded in the third week of the race when Primoz Roglic triumphed after an intense showdown with his teammate and race leader, Sepp Kuss. Jonas Vingegaard, following closely behind Roglic, nearly seized the red jersey from Kuss in a nailbiting finish. Repeating such thrilling drama is a tall order, but it echoes the unforgettable battle in 2017 when Alberto Contador claimed a memorable victory.

The other summit finish is expected to be at La Farrapona, another challenging climb with its own rich history. In 2014, Chris Froome and Alberto Contador dueled fiercely for the red jersey on this climb. The stage, known for its grueling ascents of Alto de la Cobertoria and Puerto de San Lorenzo, often features punishing weather conditions, adding an extra layer of difficulty. This climb was last featured in 2020, cementing its reputation as one of the most brutal stages in the race.

After hosting the start of the 2024 Giro d'Italia and the finale of the Tour de France, the city of Torino will once again play a pivotal role in the cycling calendar. The race will begin in Torino, with the Piedmonte region expected to host four stages before the peloton flies back to Spain. Racing is likely to resume in the Basque Country, continuing the tradition of blending challenging routes with breathtaking scenery.
