Gran Fondo Hincapie Brings Unique Gravel Ride to Merced, California
The Gran Fondo Hincapie, the only gravel ride of its kind on the West Coast, rolled through the picturesque landscapes of Merced on Saturday, attracting cycling enthusiasts from across the nation
The event showcased the region’s scenic beauty while promoting an active lifestyle among participants of all ages and skill levels.
Under a clear blue sky, cyclists navigated the challenging yet rewarding gravel course, which presented a unique blend of scenic countryside and urban roads. Despite recent rainfall that left the ground muddy and slightly treacherous, riders embraced the adventure, with many expressing their excitement about the experience.
“It feels great. I feel fortunate because the gravel route is second to none,” said Virgil Reyes, a racer from Fresno, who was among the first to cross the finish line. Although he encountered mechanical issues when his bike chain broke in the mud, Reyes remains enthusiastic about returning next year. “I've been to Colorado and other places to do other gravel rides, and this is probably one of the best-run races I've ever been to,” he added.
In response to the challenging conditions, race organizers made the decision to shorten the long course to ensure the safety of all participants. Finishers were greeted with medals and a hose-off station to clean up after the muddy ride, further highlighting the event's community spirit.
The Gran Fondo Hincapie not only provided an exhilarating experience for cyclists but also served as a significant economic boost for the local community. Wendy Carpenter, a first-time participant from San Ysidro, shared her enthusiasm: “First time in Merced, first time doing any ride like this, it's been a blast. It's a really great group out there.”
Rich Hincapie, president of Hincapie Sports, emphasized the event's focus on inclusivity rather than competition. “We don't really focus on the race aspect, the competitive side. While you could race if you want, we try to make it really less intimidating. We want kids out here, we want people who’ve never ridden before, we want people to be motivated to train and change their lifestyle. A bicycle really is a life-changing thing,” he stated.
The Gran Fondo Hincapie aims to inspire a love for cycling and promote a healthier lifestyle, making it an event that resonates with both seasoned cyclists and newcomers alike. As the sun set over Merced, participants left with a sense of accomplishment and a desire to return for next year’s ride.
