Australian cyclist Jay Vine of UAE Team Emirates-XRG surged to a thrilling victory on Stage 10 of the Vuelta a España, marking his second stage win in this year’s race. Meanwhile, teammate Jonas Vingegaard reclaimed the coveted red leader’s jersey, setting the stage for an intense battle in the general classification

In a dramatic 175.3 km stage from Parque de la Naturaleza Sendaviva to El Ferial Larra Belagua, Vine launched a powerful attack five kilometers from the summit finish, overtaking Spain’s Pablo Castrillo to cross the line first. This win doubles Vine’s stage victories in the 2024 Vuelta, matching his success on Stage 6 and underscoring his status as a top contender. Vine, who also won the mountains classification last year and currently leads it again, expressed his excitement: “Winning is so, so hard, and it’s such an incredible feeling when it happens. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to winning, because it’s just unbelievably hard.”

While Vine stole the spotlight with his stage win, the day was also marked by a significant shift in the overall race standings. Jonas Vingegaard, after losing the red jersey to Norway’s Torstein Traeen following Stage 6, launched a strong final climb to open a gap and retake the leader’s position by 26 seconds. Despite fierce efforts from Joao Almeida, who remains third overall, and British rider Tom Pidcock, fourth in the standings, Vingegaard’s performance solidified his role as race favorite moving forward.

The team’s dynamics have been under scrutiny following recent off-stage drama involving Juan Ayuso, whose surprise announcement of an early contract termination and harsh public comments about team management stirred tensions. Despite this, Ayuso supported teammate Almeida during the stage, highlighting the team’s resilience amidst controversy.

“Today was a testament to our team’s strength and focus,” said a UAE Team Emirates-XRG spokesperson. “Jay’s incredible win and Jonas’s reclaiming of the red jersey show the determination and spirit within our squad despite recent challenges.”
