Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Cyclo opens the Flemish Spring Season!
The Omloop het Nieuwsblad Cyclo will not only be the first race of the brand new Etixx Classics Tour, it is also the first big race of the Flemish cycling spring season. And it is for the amateur cyclist too!
One day after the pros, thousands of cycling tourists will take part in their first large classic race of the new cycling season, the Omloop het Nieuwsblad Cyclo. After a long hibernation for many riders, this will be the first big “test”. Riders can choose between three distances so there will be a tour that suits everyone.
Departing From Ghent Or Meerbeke – Dream Finale For Everyone
The brave cyclists who opt for the longest distance (123km) leave 't Kuipke in Ghent, just like the professionals, and are given a special course to explore. On the menu there are 10 famous hills and 4 cobbled sections in the Flemish Ardennes on the same route as the pro riders the day before, including Haaghoek, Leberg, Tenbosse, Wolvenberg, Berendries and Valkenberg.
Some of these hills are also included in the other courses (62km / 4 hills - 88km / 7 hills). Riders who opt for one of these shorter distances will depart from Meerbeke. Until 2011, the finish of "Flanders' Most Beautiful” Tour was held in Meerbeke. This location will be dusted off and put to use once again.
In the Omloop het Nieuwsblad, all participants will have the chance to ride this old finale and use their last strength to cycle across the Muur of Geraardsbergen and the Bosberg before arriving at the legendary finish in Meerbeke.
