2,500 Participants Race with Cancellara and Many Other Champions

Huge success for the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche presented by Trek  thanks to an array of stars including Moser, Bettini, Tafi and Ravanelli

7th March 2006 Tuscany, Italy - The Gran Fondo Strade Bianche by Trek took place on Sunday with 2,500 participants competing, including Fabian Cancellara who won yesterday’s pro race, his teammates from Trek – Segafredo and many legendary names from the annals of cycling history.

The day after winning his 3rd victory at Strade Bianche, Cancellara celebrated by lining up with thousands of cyclists in the Gran Fondo presented by Trek. The Gran Fondo allowed amateur cyclists from around the world to watch the race the day before and then take part and experience large parts of the same course on the "White Roads" of Tuscany.

On the beautiful cornice of the city of Siena, mayor Bruno Valentini and Head of Sports Leonardo Tafani hosted the event by accompanying the riders into the neighbouring hills.

The men’s race was won by Hubert Krys (ASD La Bagarre-Ciclistica) in 3h22’14’ (average 36.79km/h), while Claudia Gentili (Team Giletti CS) claimed the title in the women’s category in 3h51’07” (average 32.19km/h).

Participants enjoyed the traditional pasta party at the finish that included a “local” Ribollita Party.

Swiss veteran Fabian Cancellara proved his legs were as strong as ever ahead of the Spring Classics season as he won the Strade Bianche race for the third time in Italy on the Saturday, the day before the Gran Fondo. The Trek-Segafredo rider outsprinted Czech Zdenek Stybar, last year’s winner, at the finish in Siena, with the latter’s Etixx-Quick Step team-mate Gianluca Brambilla of Italy finishing third four seconds back. “This year I really want to go out with a bang,” said Cancellara, riding in his 16th and final season as a professional. “I want to thank all my team-mates for supporting me yesterday. I knew that Stybar is a cyclocross guy, so I had to be careful for him. He won last year as well, and he is very good at this last climb. I am very, very happy. Third time… and now they will name a white gravel section after me, and that’s exciting.”
