A Honeymoon Turned to Horror

On June 23rd, during what should have been one of the happiest chapters of her life, Härtig was descending the iconic Sella Pass (State Road 242) in the Dolomites—an area she adored and frequently documented—when tragedy struck.

At a bend on the descent toward Canazei, her bicycle collided head-on with a motorcycle ridden by former Italian national downhill skier Peter Runggaldier. The force of the impact was so violent that Härtig’s bicycle shattered into two pieces. Emergency responders arrived within minutes, performing resuscitation at the scene before airlifting her to San Maurizio Hospital in Bolzano.

Despite intensive care and a transfer on July 9th to a specialist trauma clinic in Germany, her condition remained critical. She died four days later.

Runggaldier, also seriously injured, was transported to Santa Chiara Hospital in Trento. Though his condition was grave, he was never reported to be in danger of death.

A certified mountain guide, Härtig was known not only for her athletic talent but for her generosity in sharing safe-travel knowledge, route guidance, and the raw beauty of mountain life. Her social media presence was a blend of skill, warmth, and authenticity that resonated deeply with her audience.

Her final posts showed a woman overflowing with joy, embracing love, adventure, and the mountains that shaped her identity.
