Your chance to cycle across the Afsluitdijk at the IJsselmeer Challenge
The Ijsselmeer Challenge this September 11-12 is you’re only chance to cycle across the Afsluitdijk and battle the Dutch elements too! The 300 km route counts towards the Gran Fondo World Tour series.
The 32-km long Afsluitdijk was built in 1932 to protect the Zuiderzee region of the Netherlands from flooding. With rising sea levels the dam is being raised two metres and the existing sluices are being improved and two new sluices built to allow fish migrate from the salty waters of the Wadden Sea to the sweet waters of the IJsselmeer. There will also be a new cycle path, which is currently closed whilst the improvements take place.
This tour is organized by NL Tour Rides, the largest organizer of tours in the Netherlands. besides this tour they organize many other tours.
There are five distances of 50, 100, 150, 200 and 300 km to suit all abilities of cyclists.
The 300 km route is part of the 2021 Gran Fondo World Tour Endurance Series. The 300 km IJsselmeer Challenge is one of the most challenging cycling rides in the Netherlands.
Participants can grab up to 1,100 Gran Fondo World Tour ® points for best man and woman.
The routes around the IJsselmeer or the Markermeer are fully mapped out with extensive aid stations on the route with technical support by Cyclon.
There are unlimited drinks, fresh Pasta-to-Go and a medal at the finish line!

Your entry package will be shipped by courier by Sept 8th, to avoid in-person package pickup.
A professional massage by Sportbase.com is available for all participants at the Finish Village in Batavia-Stad, Lelystad. Sportbase.com’s team will massage tired legs, stiff backs, necks and shoulders.
The Challenge benefits the Disabled Sports Fund. This charity is committed to making sport structurally possible for everyone with a disability.
The 2021 IJsselmeer Challenge is organized in a slightly modified form during the weekend of 11 and 12 September 2021. When registering, you choose one of the two days and a start period. A maximum of 2,000 participants per day can participate.
All participants who registered for the 2020 edition have also been informed how they can take part in the 2021 edition.
