2023 Giro d’Italia 2023 route to be unveiled on Monday October 17th

The 106th edition of the Giro d'Italia is slowly starting to take shape with the full route be announced on the Monday 17th October, the race will no doubt feature some of the hardest climbs in professional cycling, action packed racing and some of the best riders in the world.

Race organizers announced that the Grand Tour will run from Saturday May 6th - Sunday May 28th.

The 2023 edition of the Giro d’Italia will start with an an 18.4-kilometer (11.4-mile) time trial on a coastal cycle path that has been recreated from a former railway line in the region of Abruzzo. Stage 2 is a 204-kilometer (127-mile) leg from Teramo to San Salvo that is hilly in the first part but expected to end in a bunch sprint. Stage 3 will also start in the Abruzzo region, in Vasto, but it will then head south and will be detailed when the full route is revealed on Oct. 17 in Milan.

Reportedly, the last stage before the first rest day will be a flat individual time trial.

Rumours are the race will head into Switzerland in the second week for a high-mountain finale atop the the jaw-dropping climb of Crans-Montana, 16 kilometers at an average of 7%, crossing the Colle del Gran San Bernardo on the way.

The Colle del Gran San Bernardo is rumoured to be the Cima Coppi (the highest point) in the race at 2,473 meters high. It's likely to be the longest climb, a total of 34 kilometers at around 5% average gradient. It will be the first race day in the Alps and one that should create serious differences.

The final week is rumoured to include the climb of the Monte Badone near Trento, a summit finish at Zoldo Alto and a summit finish at the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, with 18km uphill ITT to the top of the Monte Lussari on the penultimate stage.

The race is rumoured to finish in Rome.

Last year’s Giro was won by Jai Hindley, the first Australian ever to win the race.

Rumours are the route will include a substantial amount of time trialing over three stages, up to 70 kilometres.

This will suit GC contender Remco Evenepoel who is rumoured to be focussing on winning the Grand Tour next year.

Join us at 11:30 Eastern, 16:30 UK, 17:30 EU on Monday 17th October as the route is unveiled in Milan.
