2nd edition of 5 Mila Marche attracts 1,200 cyclists and families
International cyclists and their families enjoyed three days of cycling at the seaside resort of Porto Recanati in the Marche Region on the Italian Adriatic coast this last weekend
The 5 Mila Marche is a project of the Marche Region promoting the territory and national and international cycle tourism, one of Italy’s “lesser known” real cycling gems.
However, the event is fast becoming a favorite with international cyclists and their families who participate in a range of cycling activities with a special gala dinner and a LIVE music concert over the long weekend. The event is a great way to celebrate the end of the season.
The weekend festival of cycling kick-started with the challenging ultra-distance 5 Mila Randonee, a non-competitive challenge over a distance of 250 kilometres and with over 5,100 meters of climbing!
For children and families, the festival village in Piazza Brancondi in Porto Recanati hosted the Cristianpack Shop Bike & Family 10km cycle ride to discover the splendid Monte Conero and its coast, complete with a food and wine aid station.
On Saturday afternoon, children of all ages can take part in a Mini 5Mila presented by Original Marines with skill tests and a sprint category and awards ceremony, while in the evening there is a gala dinner with special guests. After the special gala dinner there is a live music festival in Piazza Brancondi with one of Italy’s top DJ’s.
Sunday’s event included an 82km Medio Fondo route with 1,220m of climbing and a 113 km Gran Fondo with 1,720m of climbing.
The Marche is known for its stunning landscapes, history, artistic heritage, and coast, an eastern Italian region, sits between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea. Many professional riders use the area to train including Italian cycling legend Vincenzo Nibali, from the coast riders can climb upwards on deserted roads to altitudes over 1,400m.
The Granfondo was a challenging ride with continual climbs and descents that heading inland into the mountains.
