The Why, When, and How Of Taking A Mental Break

The Why, When, and How Of Taking A Mental Break

There comes a time in every endurance athlete’s training cycle when it’s time to take a break.

While the word “break” can be scary for many people, invoking thoughts of lost fitness and goals slipping out of sight, it’s vitally important to allow yourself the opportunity to step back mentally and rest.

A mental break, much like a physical break, gives you the chance to press reset and evaluate what it is you’re doing, and why it’s important to you. Not only is it an important time for goal setting and reflection, but it’s also a time to let yourself relax and turn your attention to things other than your athletic endeavors.

VIDEO: Taming the mighty 14,130ft high Mount Evans

If there’s one climb that stands above all in Colorado it’s Mount Evans.

Not only is it the highest summit of the Chicago Peaks, in the Front Range of the Rockies, but to top it off it’s the highest paved road in north America at a whopping 14,130ft (4,307m) elevation!

To put that in perspective by the summit you’re just 1,640ft (500m) shy of being at the top of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, but to make it that high in Europe you’ll definitely need to trade your wheels for a pair of ice axes.....not so in the U.S!

In cycling terms, it’s like taking the Galibier and sticking Alpe d’Huez on top, starting at an already oxygen deprived 7,526ft.

Watch Mike Cotty and the Col Collection, take on America's finest!
