Quintana regains Vuelta lead after attack on Lagos de Covadonga

After months of speculation regading Quintana's overall form and lack of attacks, he showed his rivals that he meant business with a huge attack on the slopes of Lagos de Covadonga on stage 10

Some crashes seemed to have taken place early into the stage. Reports are that after 15 kms - Spanish Markel Irizar (Trek), Frenchman Kevin Reza (Francaise) and Polish Bartosz Huzarski (Bora) went down very heavily. Reports are that Atapuma went down too, but was able to get back to the Peloton who has slowed to allow them to let them re-join.

6 riders managed to get away in a break after 63kms including; Ben Hermans, Victor Campanaerts, Robert Gesink, Dmitryi Gruzdev, Tobias Ludvigsson, Fabio Felline, Jan Bakelants, Egor Silin, Louis Vervaeke, Joe Dombrowski, Moreno Moser, Pierre Rolland, Omar Fraile, Vegard Staeke Laengen, Luis Angel Mate and José Gonçalves.

They pushed on and gained to a maximum lead of more than 5 minutes ahead of the Peloton before Movistar started to reel them back in.

The gaps was down to 3 minutes as they breakaway riders hit th climb of Alto del Mirador del Fito. Fraile is the first to tye top ahead of Mate, and the duo forged ahead on the descent, widening the gap to 5 minutes. However they are caught in the valley.

On the lower slopes of the Lagos de Covadonga climb, the breakaway gap is down to under 3 minutes when Louis Vervaeke goes on the attack out of the break away.

Rolland, Staeke Langen, Silin, Maté and Gonçalves chase. Gesink and Dombrowski are absorbed by the quickening pace of the Peloton.

Froome seems to struggle on the climb and is dropped by the peloton, at least 20 secs behind.

Froome doesn’t give up and claws his way back with Valverde and Fraile on his wheel

Quintana and Contador left the pace and drop one after the other opf what's left of the Peloton.

With 3.5 kms to Quintana attacks and drops Contador. The Colombian heads for the front of the race and passes lone breakaway rider Gesink down with 2.5 kms to go.

Froome and Valverde catch up and past Contador who's visibly struggling.

Quintana presses on to the stage win and the red jersey, while Gesink finishes in second, 1 second ahead of Froome, who dropped Valverde in the dying metres.

Omar Fraile is the fourth rider to finish and takes the polka dot jersey.
