TOP 5 reasons why the Giro d’Italia may offer more excitement in October!

The Giro d’italia returns this October for what promises to be an extraordinary end to the cycling season. With the UCI rearranging the cycling calendar to include as many big races as possible it offers a unique opportunity for cycling fans to feast on an autumn crammed full of racing! Plus your opportunity to ride and watch the 2020 Giro d'Italia with Italy Bike Tours!

We look at the top 5 reasons why the Giro d’Italia may offer more excitement in october than it’s usual May slot and why you should consider being part of the action.

1. The weather

The Giro has historicaly suffered from wet and inclement weather causing stages to be cancelled or rearranged. Fear not, October in Italy boasts spectacular weather and indeed in recent years has been ‘better’ than May. You only have to look at the beautiful pictures from the last five years of Giro Lombardia to understand that the sun is still shining in October in Italy.

1. The weather

2. The Unknown’s

Let’s face it nobody knows how riders bodies are going react to the new cycling calendar. Those that will try to ride back-to-back grand tours will be doing so for the first time. The conundrum of training and recovery will be need to be untangled by the most skilled of nutritionists and coaches. The suspicion is that the Giro will be more unpredictable and exciting as riders ‘peak’ at different times during the race.

2. The Unknown’s

3. Tifosi and Tranquility

Italy’s passion for the Giro d’Italia is unparalleled and the recent confirmation that spectators will not only be allowed to watch the race but encouraged is a sure sign that the country is no longer back but forward. The Government indeed is looking to use the Giro d’Italia as a beacon to show the recovery from the Covid crisis. Inevitably the Giro will be less hectic than in usual years and for this reason those travelling to Itay can look forward to getting even closer to the action. Logistics are also becoming a lot easier for those following the race.

3. Tifosi and Tranquility

4. The Ineos Question

Like them or loath them you can’t deny that Team Ineos are the boys to beat in grand tours and recent history suggests that whilst the TdF remains there primary goal the Giro is now seen as a ‘must win’. So who exactly do they send as there main GC contender?

Rumours suggest that Richard Carapaz will defend his crown which leads to a mouth watering prospect of him battling for the pink jersey against his former Movistar teammates. With no love lost between either Carapaz and Movistar regarding his move to Ineos, expect fireworks in the last week!

4. The Ineos Question

5. No Palermo no Party!

Popular with many fans the Grand Depart has become the staple of the Giro in recent years. But with a political and covid upheaval, Hungary has elected not to stage Grand Depart in Budapest paving the way for all 21 stages to take place in Italy.

It is Palermo who stepped in to host the Giro and the prospect of several more stages in Sicily prior to arriving on the mainland makes the mouth water. If Sicily has ever been on your bucket list be sure to visit in October for the Grand Depart!

5. No Palermo no Party!
