Yingst and Simonds Crowned Fastest at Gran Fondo Moab

The Gran Fondo Moab, held on May 3-4, attracted over 500 cycling enthusiasts to the breathtaking landscapes of Moab, Utah, for a weekend filled with camaraderie, competition, and stunning vistas. The event featured a 50-mile Gran Fondo on Saturday and a challenging gravel ride on Sunday, allowing participants to experience the unique beauty and rugged terrain that Moab is renowned for.

On Saturday, approximately 300 riders took on the 50-mile Gran Fondo, embracing the mantra of "a ride, not a race." Participants received overall and King/Queen of the Mountain (KOM/QOM) times for the challenging climb, highlighting their achievements in a supportive atmosphere.

In the women's category, Allie Yingst from Fruita, CO, emerged as the fastest, completing the course in 1:38:31.3. She was followed closely by Lian Finch from Vancouver, who finished in 1:41:52, and Kirsten Mayell, who secured third place with a time of 1:43:45.3.

The men's category saw Grant Simonds of Open Range Consulting take the top spot with an impressive time of 1:17:25. Merritt Jones from Stay Park City Cycling finished second at 1:18:22.5, while Joel Homan from Poison Spider Bicycles rounded out the podium in third place with the same time. Notably, 70-year-old Susan Wentworth won the QOM award with a remarkable climb time of 51:33, and Grant Simonds also claimed the KOM with a time of 44:23.

Sunday's gravel ride presented a different challenge

Sunday's gravel ride presented a different challenge, as riders faced washboard climbs and sandy washes, testing their endurance and resilience. In the women's category, Stephanie Liptak clocked in at 4:04:56 to claim victory, followed by Lian Finch in 4:10:58 and Rebecca Simmons in 4:31:01.

For the men, Joel Homan once again showcased his prowess, finishing first with a time of 2:46:13. Gran Fondo winner Grant Simonds secured second place in the gravel ride with a time of 2:54:40, while Scott B. Kelley completed the podium in 3:08:11. Rebecca Simmons also earned the QOM title for the gravel ride with a time of 1:19:32, while Joel Homan captured the KOM in 59:31.
