A driver without legs who used canes to operate a car lost control and mowed down a group of Irish cyclists in the Costa Blanca, Spain seriously injuring three of them with one of them left in a Coma

Three Irish cyclists have been hospitalised following a serious road traffic collision in southern Spain, with one rider now in a coma after a car struck a group of cyclists from Cork during a cycling trip on the Costa Blanca.

The incident, which occurred on a popular cycling route in Alicante province, has sparked renewed concerns over road safety for cyclists in Spain’s tourist hotspots.

Sources from the Guardia Civil Traffic Division said that the accident happened shortly after 3.30pm on Wednesday April 8 on the CV-925 road near the village of Torremendo, in the Orihuela municipality at kilometre 9 of this route, which runs over the dam of the La Pedrera reservoir and is not far from the town of Torremendo.

Three injured cyclists, were part of a larger group of six cyclists from Cork who had travelled to Alicante for a cycling holiday.

They were taken to the Hospital Comarcal de la Vega Baja by medical personnel. The Guardia Civil, the Local Police, and several units of the SAMU went to the scene to help the injured.

In the last few years, this road and the CV-950, which connects it, have seen a lot of accidents, some of which have been fatal.

It is used for tourism and is often visited by foreign residents in the Vega Baja. There is a lot of traffic on the road, including cars, hikers going to the reservoir, groups of cyclists exercising, and most of all, motorcyclists.

The driver, who was arrested by police, had no legs and was using canes to control the car. Guardia Civil established that his vehicle had been modified without the required certification.

Spanish police are considering pressing charges for reckless driving and more if the victim's conditions deteriorate further.

The most seriously injured rider is Donal Goulding, a Senior Chief Petty Officer with the Irish Naval Service and an active member of Ballincollig Crusaders Cycling Club in Cork.

GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the seriously injured cyclist's family who have travelled to Spain while he remains hospitalised. Nearly €80,000 euros of the planned €90,000 euros has been raised.

Donie remains in an induced coma, where he is receiving world-class care. Doctors are performing daily scans and tests to monitor his condition closely. Get well soon Donie and company.
