Three times World champion Dory Selinger tragically killed by car in North Texas

The cycling community across the USA is mourning the loss of a real cycling hero, mentor, and father.

Three times World champion Dory Selinger tragically killed by car in North Texas

Dory Selinger, a Paralympic champion and longtime cyclist, was killed in a crash involving a vehicle early in the morning of April 16, 2026, near Alma Drive and the Sam Rayburn Tollway service road, according to McKinney police.

Selinger’s wife, Laura, said cycling was a daily part of his life, something he rarely missed.

She said she became alarmed just after 6 a.m. when she received an alert from his tracking device indicating he had been in an accident.

She rushed to the scene, not expecting the worst, “I left right away, but I never expected that he wouldn’t be alive,” Laura said.

Police said Selinger died at the scene.

Dory Selinger was a three-time world champion and a four-time Paralympic medalist, including gold at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics and multiple medals at the 2000 Sydney Games.

He wasn’t just a champion — he was a symbol of what it means to rebuild a life from nothing.

The tragedy that changed everything

In January 1993, while riding with friends in Northern California, a driver intentionally rammed into their group.

One of his friends was killed.

Dory was thrown into a seven-day coma, suffered a traumatic brain injury, and ultimately had his right leg amputated below the knee.

Most people would never ride again.

Dory became a world champion.

After the amputation, he didn’t retreat from cycling — he doubled down.

He went on to win:

- Gold at the 1996 Paralympics
- Silver + two Bronze medals at the 2000 Paralympics
- Multiple World Championship titles in 1998 and 2002

He became known not just for winning, but for mentoring younger riders, coaching, and designing prosthetics for other amputees.

He turned trauma into purpose.

“His perseverance was incredible. He got through so much. He accomplished so much. I want to be just like him in that way,” Laura said.
