Shock as Okanagan Granfondo Bids a Fond Farewell after 14 years
After 14 incredible years, it's time to say goodbye to the Okanagan Granfondo. Since that very first ride in 2011, more than 25,000 cyclists have joined the start line in Penticton, creating unforgettable moments on the roads of the South Okanagan.
Organizers of Okanagan Granfondo have made the tough decision to cancel organizing one of Canada's Premier cycling events in British Columbia.
In just over a decade, the Okanagan Granfondo gained national and international recognition and as one of the top cycling events in Canada and beyond, attracting well over 3,000 particpants every year.
Nestled between the stunning lakes of Lake Okanagan and Skaha Lake, Penticton, B.C. it has been ranked as Canada’s top cycling destinations. With over 60 wineries within a 20 minutes’ drive, a local farmers market, beautiful beaches and loads of festivals and events throughout the year, Penticton and the South Okanagan has something for the entire family.
One of the most popular elements of the Okanagan Granfondo was it's ability to attract cyclists of all ages, talents and abilities, from beginners to professionals and former professionals including Former Olympian and professional cyclist and hill climbing ace Phil Gaimon from California.
Organizers OG Events released the following statement today, "What started as a bold idea grew into a signature event that brought riders from across Canada and beyond to experience the challenge, camaraderie, and joy of cycling together.
This decision wasn't easy, but it feels like the right moment to shift gears. OG Events will be exploring new ways to bring cyclists together, including possible gravel ride and race opportunities right here in the Okanagan. As the cycling world evolves, we're excited to evolve with it.
None of this journey would have been possible without you—our riders, volunteers, sponsors, and the City of Penticton. You've been the heart of the Granfondo. Together, we've not only celebrated the love of cycling but also made a real difference: supporting youth cycling programs, boosting the local economy, and raising over $400,000 for the Desmoid Tumour Foundation of Canada through Athina's Ride in the past five years alone.
As we reflect on all we've shared, one thing is certain: we built something truly special together. Our participants have ranged from 2-year-olds in the Piccolofondo to a 91-year-old competitor in the Okanagan Granfondo. We've celebrated milestones such as weddings on the weekend and have seen many individuals achieve their personal goal of completing a Granfondo. These stories and achievements have enriched our community and highlighted the diverse and inclusive spirit of our events. The friendships, the finish line celebrations, the early morning starts, and the cheers from volunteers—these are memories we'll carry forward with pride and gratitude.
While the Granfondo has crossed its finish line, our mantra remains: Ride Hard. Smile Often. We hope you'll stay connected as we chart new paths in the years ahead."
The event, like many others, was hit really hard by the pandemic, being cancelled in 2020 and then as restrictions tightened again in Canada, organizers were left distraught and the community heartbroken in having to cancel the ride again in 2021. Riders who registered in 2020 and 2021 had their entries “rolled over” to 2022.
Organizers and the community put on a brave face with their mantra "Ride Hard. Smile Often”. Owner and lead organizer behind the event is Jodi Cross, who transformed the cycle challenge.
Tragically in 2025, a women, named Ava Choy was killed during the 2025 Okanagan Granfondo. Choy, was a dedicated cyclist lost her life at the tender age of 49. Choy was one of three participants struck by a vehicle on White Lake Road on July 13, leaving her family and friends in profound grief. Choy's friends launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and support the family.
The community support of over 400 volunteers who came out very year with incredible vibes was truly epic.
The whole Penticton community came out, showing their love for cycling, the community and showcasing just how truly marvellous the region is. Even the day’s traffic control was epic, turning a system of roads and highways across the south Okanagan into a temporary bike course for a single day each summer. It was a massive undertaking.
Congratulations to the organizers OG Events, Jodi Cross and the whole Okanagan and Penticton community for their incredible efforts over the last 14 years.
The event will be sorely missed.
