Inaugural Alpes Vaujany announced as 2020/21 GFNY Europe Championship

NEW YORK CITY, October 2, 2019 – Vaujany, in the French Alps will host the 2020/21 GFNY Europe Championship on August 30, 2020. Riders will get to experience some of the most famous climbs in the world and an opportunity to test themselves on a tough course, deserving of the GFNY Europe Championship label.

Two route options are offered. The competitive long route covers 115km and 4082m of climbing and is a test of both legs and willpower.

A controlled start on a descent from the mountain village of Vaujany will lead straight into the first challenge, a 25km climb up Col de la Croix de Fer, through forests, past lac de Grand Maison to the peak at 2067m. Riders will then descend before a slightly more difficult climb up the other side of Col de la Croix Fer. The final challenge will then be the climb back to Vaujany for the finish line celebration.

The non-competitive medium route covers 41km and 1705m of climbing and follows the same descending start as the long course. Riders then have a 15km climb to lac de Grand Maison before turning around, descending Croix de Fer and facing the final challenge back up to Vaujany and the finish line.

In the week leading up to race day, riders can join the GFNY Camp which offers daily supported rides on famous climbs such as Galibier, Izoard or Alpe d’Huez.

“We are very excited to host a GFNY in the French Alps and especially proud of this Championship course,” said GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “Vaujany is a beautiful host location, surrounded by the most famous climbs in the world. There is accommodation and restaurants to suit all budgets, making this a great pick for a summer European ride and race vacation.”

The top 20% of riders over all age groups in the long course qualify for a front corral start at the GFNY World Championship in NYC on May 16, 2021.
