Roglic abandons rain-soaked Stage 16 as Isaac del Toro and Juan Ayuso Crack!
Slovenian Primoz Roglic abandoned Giro d'Italia Stage 16 after suffering another crash in treacherous rain-soaked conditions on Tuesday. Juan Ayuso and Isaac del Toro both crack. del Toro hangs onto his lead by just a few seconds as Yates and Carapaz ready to grab the Pink Jersey in the final week! Bernal crashes.
The 2023 winner's title bid had suffered a major blow after a crash on Saturday, which was his third in a week. Former winner Primoz Roglic whose troubled race ended in abandonment after suffering a fourth crash in this year's race. Richard Carapaz was also involved but was able to continue.
It is the fifth time in his last nine Grand Tours he has failed to finish the race.
Tuesday's stage 16 opened a mountainous final week on the Giro.
The 203 km stage started under rain, a true nightmare for those suffering from fatigue into the final week of the race. The nightmare proved to be very much true for many riders later in the day. The stage from Piazzola Sul Brenta to San Valentino included four major climbs across the Dolomites — including an uphill finish – and was made more challenging due to rain early in the stage.
Former Tour de France winner, Egan Bernal of Ineos, crashed on a descent when another rider's rain jacket appeared to become tangled in his wheel. He changed bikes and rode on, climbing to sixth overall.
Two other riders were forced to withdraw, Josh Tarling of Ineos abandoned out after hitting a guardrail while Italian Alessio Martinelli plunged into a ravine during a descent and was taken to hospital. He is currently conscious and his condition is stable.
On the penultimate climb of the day, the Passo Santa Barbara, EF's pace in the peloton saw Juan Ayuso completely crack in a dramatic end to his chances of winning the Giro.
Thymen Arensman also struggled. Tudor picked up the pace afterwards, with Michael Storer and Max Poole then going on the attack, forcing UAE to begin pacing in the group after it became clear that Ayuso was dropped.
Out front seven riders went clear: Lorenzo Fortunato, Christian Scaroni, Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda, Yannis Voisard, Gijs Leemreize, Pello Bilbao and Sylvain Moniquet.
Christian Scaroni and fellow Italian and Astana team-mate Lorenzo Fortunato, the two survivors of a long breakaway, crossed the line holding hands at the end of a mountainous 203-kilometre push from Piazzola sul Brenta to San Valentino. "We spoke about it. He said he would give the stage to me. He's an incredible mate," said Scaroni. Scaroni became the first Italian to win a stage on this year's Giro, while Fortunato tightened his hold on the king of the mountains classification.
Isaac del Toro cracked and only managed to hold on to the pink jersey by a few seconds over Richard Carapaz and Simon Yates.
Wednesday brings a 155km run from San Michele all'Adige to Bormio that organisers rate three out of five for difficultly. Friday and Saturday offer two five-star days with a string of huge climbs which will decide who can enjoy a triumphal entry to Rome at the end of a flat final stage.
