Gran Fondo Isle of Man added to UCI Gran Fondo World Series calendar for 2021

Gran Fondo Isle of Man is a continental style Sportive that promises to enhance the Isle of Man’s reputation as a leading cycling destination. Still very rare in the UK, yet hugely popular on the continent, cyclists from the British Isles would once have to travel large distances to experience a true Gran Fondo, so we are delighted to host one of what is only a handful of such events within easy reach of the cycling-mad British public.

Similar to the London Marathon, the Isle of Man Cyclefest Gran Fondo provides the rare opportunity for amateurs to race on closed road sections, with the front of the field racing to win, while the majority of entrants test themselves against the course and the clock through the Island’s wonderful countryside. Entrants can choose between two courses both brimming with the delights of cycling on the Isle of Man.

Sunday’s Gran Fondo capitalizes on the Island’s stunning coastal roads, picturesque villages and rolling countryside with a 80 mile race featuring closed road sections, one of only a handful of Gran Fondos scheduled in the British Isles in 2016. Packed with the Island’s toughest climbs, competitors will be faced with 25% gradients as they conquer each classic ascent clocking up 6500 feet of climbing by the end of the day.

Starting at Milntown, the Gran Fondo will circumnavigate the Island’s Northern plains as a warm up for the first real test; the climb out of Ballaugh Glen known as Druidale. The route will then take the riders towards the west of the Island before heading up the beautiful but brutal Round Table climb. A network of B roads follow featuring a number of sharp climbs and testing descents, not to mention a short off road section in the style of the Italian Strade Bianche.

The final test is the toughest of them all. Considered to be the hardest climb facing a cyclist on the Isle of Man, and featuring in Simon Warren’s infamous book, 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs, the mighty Injebreck should prove to be the decisive test in the Isle of Man Gran Fondo. For an early preview of the course and climbs go to the official Isle of Man Cyclefest youtube channel.

The Gran Fondo is the final event in the Isle of Man Cyclefest Championship and also includes separate competitions for the King and Queen of the Mountains, decided by timed ascents of Druidale, Round Table and Injebreck.

For the less energetic, Isle of Man Cyclefest also offers a more beginner friendly ‘Piccolo Fondo’ course to encourage all-comers, with participants returning to Milntown estate in time for a spot of lunch and the first of the day’s music acts.

Winding its way around the peaceful coastline and flatter farmland of the northern plains, the 22 mile short course is a mini delight with a patchwork of tiny villages and church steeples, set against a backdrop of rolling fields and the wide expanse of the Island’s endless coastline.

Due to the ongoing pandemic and the current border restrictions on the Isle of Man, Gran Fondo Isle of Man 2021 will take place on a new date of the 4th and 5th of September. We plan to confirm event format and schedule and open entries by the end of April. Thank you to all our supporters for their patience and we look forward to seeing you all on the start line in September!
