UCI Gran Fondo World Series Perth Tested Worlds Courses In Hot Weather Conditions

Perth, Australia, March 13th - Perth has organized the very first event in the UCI World Cycling Tour back in 2011 and had the honor to be the first event under the new name “UCI Gran Fondo World Series”. On top of that, they will organize the Gran Fondo World Championships in the first weekend of September. A good chance to test the courses for Worlds and for local riders to qualify in their home-country.

The time trial on Friday had a scenic course along the Swan River with a technical section over the Elizabeth Quay wooden bridge. The 16km long course has straight long lines with wind in front on the way to go and wind in the back after the turning point towards the finish.

First overall male was Jonathan Skinner who finished in a time of 18:52 (50.9km/h average) beating Jon Gregg (18:57) and Michael Teniswood (19:01). First overall female was Rebecca Mackey (20:59) with an averall speed of 45.7km/h. She was faster than her compatriots Amanda Nabi (21:31) and Laurelea Moss (21:38).

The Gran Fondo on Sunday started early in the morning at 6:30 to avoid traffic and the heat. During the day, temperature rose towards 38 degrees Celsius, but by that time, most of the riders doing the 142km or the 117km already returned to the city.

The course had a flat start with 2 minutes interval over the freeway to attack Zig Zag Mountain after 50k, spreading the different age groups who had merged along the course back into smaller pelotons. The climbs are never very steep, but rolling hills until km 80 where it went back over the same roads towards the finish.

Best overall time on the long distance was for ex pro-rider Patrick Joncker who finished first in the fast 45-49 age group. Paul Miller scored the fastest overall time in the shorter distance, winning his 54-59 age group.

All females started with the older males halfway the course at Lightning Park to finish back in the city after 117km. The sprint between 11 opponents had Jessica Huston (F19-34), Laurelea Moss (F35-39) and Jeannie Blakemore from New Zealand (F40-44) is winners.

A total of 402 riders took the start in the time trial while 980 riders went for a battle in the road races, a considerable growth compared to the previous years.
