Queensland’s cycling spotlight turned to Brisbane this weekend as the Tour de Brisbane retured with an expanded program and a truly iconic new finale. As the second Australian qualifier event of the season, the event played a key role on the international calendar, combining world championship qualification, continental titles and one of Australia’s most distinctive urban courses.

Sunday’s headline event remained the 110km Gran Fondo, a ride that has rapidly built a reputation as one of the most unique mass participation races in the series. This year’s edition introduced a brand-new finish on the Story Bridge. The 110km Gran Fondo was closed to all traffic, no better way to experience the landmarks of Brisbane.

The Gran Fondo course itself was defined by constant changes of scenery, flowing through urban streets, riverside sections and major river crossings, giving riders a rare chance to experience Brisbane from a fully closed-road perspective. The key selection point of the day, however, came well before the finale with the ascent of Mount Coot-tha.

At just over 2 kilometres in length with an average gradient of 9%, Mount Coot-tha is short, steep and decisive. Crested after approximately 41 kilometres, the climb is expected to split the peloton early.

In the men's race it came down to a sprint between Mitchell Stewart, Josha Rowe and Ryan Thomas, with Stewart winnin in a time of 02:36:04 ahead of Rowe and Thomas.

In the women's race also came down to sprint with Brittany Dutton fastest in a time of 02:51:02, 3 seconds ahead of Shauna Frey in second and Bronwyn MaCGregor in third place 5 seconds behind.

Those finishing in the top 25% of their UCI age/gender category qualified for worlds championships taking place in Niseko, Japan, this 26-30 August 2026.
