Sir Bradley Wiggins Checks Into U.S. Trauma Rehabilitation Clinic with Support from Lance Armstrong

Sir Bradley Wiggins, the former Tour de France champion and five-time Olympic gold medallist, is set to enter a specialist trauma rehabilitation clinic in the United States after publicly acknowledging ongoing mental health and substance use struggles.

The trip to a Utah-based trauma counselling centre will be funded by fellow former professional cyclist Lance Armstrong, who has offered further support and opportunities as Wiggins works toward recovery.

Wiggins, who retired from competitive cycling in December 2016, has previously spoken openly about becoming a "functioning addict" and the personal battles he has faced since leaving the sport. During a public appearance at the Barbican in York, he confirmed plans to travel to the U.S. on Friday to receive targeted trauma therapy designed to tackle the underlying issues contributing to his substance use and mental health decline.

The move follows a period of candid reflection and increasingly public conversations about athlete wellbeing. Wiggins said he maintains regular contact with Armstrong and expressed appreciation for the financial and practical support. "I still speak to him and see him," he told the audience. "He's paid for me to go and see a top trauma counselling clinic in Utah, so I'm looking forward to that." Wiggins also revealed Armstrong has offered him a role back in cycling that would not require him to race, describing it as a "platform" that could aid his recovery and future engagement with the sport.

This development underscores a wider trend in elite sports toward addressing mental health openly and providing access to specialised care. Experts say trauma-informed counselling can be critical for former athletes who face identity loss, chronic pain, and the pressure to self-medicate after high-performance careers. Wiggins’ decision to seek treatment publicly may encourage other athletes to pursue help and reduce stigma around mental health and addiction in athletics.

"I want to get better and be in a place where I can give something back", Wiggins said, "Going to a specialist clinic feels like the right step. I’m grateful to Lance for making this possible and to everyone who has supported me."

Sir Bradley Wiggins is one of Britain’s most decorated cyclists, with a career highlighted by a 2012 Tour de France victory and five Olympic gold medals across track and road events. Since retiring from competition in 2016, Wiggins has been outspoken about the personal and health challenges he has faced. He continues to engage with the cycling community through mentorship and media work while focusing on recovery and wellbeing.
