Polish cyclist plunges to her death after loosing control on Sa Calobra climb in Mallorca

The accident occurred shortly before 2.30pm.

Witnesses say she lost control of her bike, veered off the road to the left and then fell onto a rocky area with dense vegetation some 15 metres below.

The accident was on a downhill section of the road where cyclists pick up speed before entering a wooded area.

She was with a group of cyclists who attempted to resuscitate her before the emergency services - paramedics, Fire and Rescue and the Soller Mountain Rescue Group - arrived.

Unfortunately she died at the scene.

The Sa Calobra climb is one of the main reasons why cyclists come to Mallorca. With about 7% average gradient and less then 10km of climbing, Sa Calobra is not as challenging as the giants of the Alps and the Pyrenees, but it is an extraordinary climb indeed and certainly the most famous one in Mallorca. Its emblematic 26 hairpin bends, breathtaking views and spine-tingling descent have captured the hearts of many cyclists.

There have been serious accidents involving cyclists in this area in the past with cyclist misjudging their downhill speed combined with the sharp bends. Extra care is required by cyclists who are unfamiliar with the climb.

The tragedy comes just before the islands biggest cycling event, the 8,500 rider Mallorca 312 taking place on April 24th 2026.
