The Heartbreak Hundred is a beautiful and difficult century. It is held on the same day as the Heartbreak Double Century. The ride, which only has five turns, winds through high desert and alpine forest landscapes, passing through Los Padres National Forest and Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge.

The first ascent leads from Lebec to Frazier Park, followed by climbs to Mount Pinos and Apache Saddle. Then an awesome descent winds down a ridge dividing the huge Central Valley on the right and the Cuyama and Lockwood Valleys on the left.

A left turn on Highway 166 and another left turn on Highway 33 lead to Ventucopa. The route then continues through Cuyama Valley and starts climbing up Lockwood Valley, crossing the infamous «Heartbreak Hill». Eventually the course leads back to Frazier Park and down to Lebec.

Heartbreak Hundred

Climbing begins right from the start! Take time to look around; the scenery here is truly beautiful, as the high desert gives way to alpine forests and gently sloping mountain meadows.

After reaching the 1st aid station at Apache Saddle, prepare yourself for one of the most rewarding descents in all of Southern California. You’ll roll and then descend for 20 miles along the ridge that divides the Lockwood Valley on your left from the huge Central Valley on your right. Watch for wildlife as you pass through the Los Padres National Forest and the Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge.

The descent continues at Highway 166. A left here and another onto Highway 33, and then you’ll be a few miles from your 2nd aid station at “Santa Barbara Pistachio Co” in Ventucopa.

You'll then ride through the beautiful Cuyama Valley; then you'll turn left turn at Lockwood Valley Road and begin a gradual climb that just keeps getting steeper. As you reach the infamous Heartbreak Hill in the afternoon sun you’ll understand how the climb got that name. Just in time, you'll reach your 3rd aid station.

Leaving Heartbreak Hill, you’ll descend and climb your way to Frazier Park and eventually return to the start/finish in Lebec.
