Sagan Cracks in the Tour of Poland
Australian Jack Haig of Orica-Scott took his first ever WorldTour victory by winning the sixth stage of the Tour de Pologne on Thursday
With aound 30 kms to go, Peter Sagan cracked on the hilly run into Zakopane. The last 64 kilometres had five mountain primes on the Bustryk, Butorowy Wierch in Koscielisko and Glodówka Passes.
The hilly finale proved too much for Sagan who sat up and let the race lead go and eventually crossed the line to finish 39th on GC.
Meanwhile Haig attacked from the final leading groupt and built a lead of 50 seconds while the GC players marked each other.
Behind Haig, a stinging attack from Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain – Merida) with 9.5km to go saw the chasing group split with riders spread out across the road, however the group was able to come back together befoe the final 2.5km rise towards the line.
"I’m super happy to get the win today after trying on stage three and coming relatively close, so to be able to try again and have good enough legs to stay away and pull of the win this time was quite special," said the 23-year-old. "I think to do it on a stage that was so hard and with so many good guys preparing for the Vuelta, it made it even more special.
"It was also nice to show all the hard work that I’ve put in over the last couple of years and especially the past couple of weeks training in Andorra preparing for this and the Vuelta."
"Today showed I had good legs to be able to attack the way that I did, stay away to the finish and still have a bit of a gap. It’s a really good feeling."
Haig moved up to 12th place in the overall standings at 43 seconds from race leader Dylan Teuns.
