Boorsma and Gill win Giro at the RBC GranFondo Whistler
Toronto Hustle's Kyle Boorsma out sprinted a leading group of five riders in the mens race, as Vancouver's Haley Gill soloed across the line in the women's race at this year's RBC GranFondo Giro on Saturday
The race from Vancouver's Stanley Park finished at Whistler's Blackcomb Way West after 122-kilometres.
Boorsma from Guelph, Ontario crossed the finish in a time of 3 hours 10 mis 18 secs ahead of Nigel Ellsay and Lachlan Norris.
Boorsma said "It's was a strong field with a lot of great riders out there to do battle against. I feel like it was an amazing day for our team Toronto Hustle. It wasn't just me, it was a team effort," said Boorsma "A lot of the favorites didn't have teammates in the race so put team mates up the road to put pressure on them"
In the women's race from Squamish and Whistler, Haley Gill from Vancouver finished 14 seconds ahead of a leading group of six riders, Sara Bergen from Vancouver was second and Emma Grant from California rounded out the women's podium.
Gill attacked the leading group with 6 kms to go and said. "With 12 kms to go, no one would work on the front, so with 6 kms to go, I just went for it."
Around 4,500 cyclists took part in this year's event which featured the Giro race and Gran Fondo rides, the Forte (152km) which started with an epic mountain climb up Cypress Mountain, the GranFondo (122km) and the Medio (55km).
