Cambridgeshire becomes Biggest UCI Gran Fondo

The mainly flat Gran Fondo on fully closed roads in Peterborough has become the biggest event in its third edition with over 8,000 participants

The time trial on Saturday was sold out in a few weeks when opening registrations this winter. 800 riders took on challenging course where wind played an important factor. The only difficulty along the 16 miles/26k course was a sharp short hill. The 79 miles / 127km Gran Fondo on Sunday featured a fast course, with such a big peloton, starts were given with first the race-wave for licensed riders with intervals between the starting groups followed by the sport wave for non-licensed riders.

The British event has brought most qualified riders to the World Championships in the past years.

The only qualifier event in New Zealand last week attracted more than 1000 riders under a bright sun for the second edition of their UCI qualifier.

Numbers went down compared to last year as the main road between Christchurch and Blenheim wasn't reopened after an earthquake and riders had to make a big detour to get it to the venue.

Overall fastest male was Stuart Holder from Auckland, fastest female was Alice Chaplin, again from Auckland. Link to provisional results.

Tour de Bintan shines in debut as UCI race

The tropical weather at the 2017 Tour de Bintan last weekend didn’t spoil the enjoyment for the thousand riders set out with the aim of qualifying for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, aka, the world amateur cycling championships. Held on the tropical Indonesian island that gives the race its name, the iconic Tour de Bintan, one of the Southeast Asia’s premier amateur stage races, gained some extra lustre this year as the March 3-5 event became one of 19 global stops on the UCI Gran Fondo World Series (GFWS) calendar.

This meant that the opening two stages of the race – Friday’s Individual Time Trial and Saturday’s Gran Fondo Classic – were qualifying events for the world championships, which this year will take place in Albi, France from August 24-27.
