Gravel Rules the Gran at the Bookwalter Binge Gran Fondo in Asheville
A party on two wheels studded with races on timed segments, with an easy-going end-of-season vibe
Gravel segments were a hit last year, so Binge founder (and resident Ashevillian) Brent Bookwalter of the Mitchelton-SCOTT racing team re-designed the Gran route to include even more gravel!
The route change will result in slightly shorter distances for the Gran and Medio routes, as well as a new timed segment climb followed by a six-mile-long descent. Riders will choose from three route options for this 6th Annual Binge:
Gran Route – 77 miles with 6,250 ft of climbing featuring three segments of gravel/dirt road
Medio Route – 55 miles with 4,500 ft of climbing
Piccolo Route - 39 miles with 2,850 ft of climbing
No changes have been made to the Piccolo route, and both the Medio and Piccolo offer 100% paved roads.
Brent Bookwalter said that “The after-ride party has become such an important part of our end of season celebration and fundraising efforts, we decided to give it a proper name: the Binge Bash.”
The Binge Bash invites riders, volunteers, sponsors and first responders to come together for lunch, Asheville-brewed craft beers, raffle prizes, and podium prizes. All registered riders also receive a custom-made pair of DeFeet Aireator socks.
The Bookwalter Binge is a non-profit organization with a mission of giving back to the Asheville community in ways that reflect a passion to protect the environment so all can enjoy playing outside. Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, as well as other local non-profits, receive charitable contributions from the Binge.
