Velo Girl Rides Announces Warren Wilson College will host Bookwalter Binge Gran Fondo Two-Day Event
Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC will host Friday festivities as well as the Bookwalter Binge Gran Fondo
Asheville, NC – August XX, 2019 – Velo Girl Rides® announced today that Warren Wilson College will again sponsor the Bookwalter Binge Gran Fondo as well as hosting festivities on campus the day before the gran fondo ride.
This year The Binge shifts to a two-day schedule -- with rider packet pickup, day-of registration (if any spots are left) and a volunteer work party all taking place on Friday October 25 on the Warren Wilson College campus.
But it won’t all be logistics and work, as volunteers and cyclists will enjoy craft brews from Highland Brewing and tasty appetizers from Native Kitchen & Social Pub on Friday evening. The pre-ride celebration will give cyclists, volunteers and sponsors the chance to socialize with one another on the scenic college campus located near Asheville.
The following morning, Warren Wilson College will again serve as the start and finish venue for the gran fondo format event. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Warren Wilson College campus will be alive with autumn colors.
As cyclists and volunteers return from the open road course on Saturday, they’ll join their families and sponsors at the College’s historic Bryson Gym so that everyone can celebrate the culmination of the event.
The members of the Warren Wilson College Cycling Team serve as stewards for the event by helping with various volunteer tasks and by riding in the event. This year they’ll be honored when they line up at the Start, immediately behind the peloton of professional cyclists who travel to Asheville to ride in The Binge with founders Brent and Jamie Bookwalter.

“We are honored to host and sponsor the Bookwalter Binge Gran Fondo at Warren Wilson College” said Dr. Lynn Morton, president of Warren Wilson College. “As an active college with a nationally ranked cycling team ourselves, the event fits us perfectly. It will be exciting for our team to ride with professional cyclists on this challenging and beautiful course.”
“The Binge is growing, and I am excited that Warren Wilson College is making a solid commitment to support the event,” explained Brent Bookwalter. “The campus is the perfect home for the Binge and I am looking forward to riding with the Warren Wilson Owls.”
The Bookwalter Binge is a challenging Gran Fondo, studded with racing on timed segments of tough climbs. Participants ride alongside female and male pro cyclists as they celebrate the end of their season racing all over the world and the country. Riders, volunteers and sponsors celebrate the finish at the Binge Bash, a party and fundraiser held on the campus of Warren Wilson College.
A charity fundraising event, the Binge is held on the last Saturday every October in Asheville, North Carolina. Funds raised by the event are deployed to protect the environment through land conservation, a cause that is important to Brent and Jamie Bookwalter. The cornerstone non-profit partner is Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, an organization that conserves unique plant and animal habitat, clean water, farmland, scenic beauty, and places for people to enjoy outdoor recreation in the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. First responders and other non-profit organizations receive funding from The Binge as well.
Registration is on pace to sell out before October 26, 2019 and space is limited to 350 riders. Participants may register online.
