Alton and Krainer Dominate at UCI Tour de Brisbane, Qualifying for World Championships

The UCI Tour de Brisbane witnessed exhilarating displays of endurance and speed as cyclists from across the region gathered this weekend for a chance to secure their spots at the upcoming UCI Gran Fondo World Championships

Thousands of cyclists from across the region gathered this weekend

The event, featuring a grueling 110km Gran Fondo race on closed roads in downtown Brisbane, saw former professional cyclist Franz Taruia Krainer and Australian rider Imogen Alton emerging victorious in their respective categories.

Krainer clinched the title in the men's race with a nail-biting sprint finish, clocking in at 2:51:12. He narrowly outpaced fellow competitors Kester McQueen and Benjamin Quinn, who rounded out the podium in an electrifying finish that had spectators on the edge of their seats.

“I knew it was going to be a tough race, especially with such strong competitors,” said Krainer. “I just focused on my pacing and waited for the right moment to make my move. Winning here means a lot, especially with the World Championships on the line.”

In the women's category, Imogen Alton showcased her strength and strategy, attacking the field and crossing the finish line with a time of 3:06:52. Pip Hill and Elle De Nooyer followed closely, with Hill edging out De Nooyer for second place just two minutes later.

“I felt great out there,” Alton remarked. “The atmosphere was electric, and I knew I had to push hard to secure my spot. Competing at the World Championships is a dream come true, and I’m excited to represent Australia.”

In addition to the main event, the UCI Tour de Brisbane also featured an 80km Medio Fondo, where Prue French took the women’s title with a time of 2:26:19, while Jackson Starmer dominated the men’s race, finishing in 2:15:28.

One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity for riders to qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, set to take place in Australia this October. Cyclists finishing in the top 25% of their age and gender categories automatically qualified, adding an extra layer of intensity to the competition.

“The UCI Tour de Brisbane is not just a race; it’s a celebration of cycling and community,” said event organizer Mark Thompson. “We’re thrilled to see so many passionate cyclists pushing their limits and qualifying for the World Championships. The energy this weekend was incredible, and we can’t wait to see our athletes shine on the world stage.”

The UCI Tour de Brisbane continues to grow in popularity, attracting both amateur and professional cyclists eager to test their mettle against some of the best in the sport. With its challenging courses and vibrant atmosphere, the event is poised to become a staple in the cycling calendar.

Participant Graham Jenkings said "Thank you for a superb event. The road closures make this a world class, and epic adventure. The volunteers absolutely made the day work! Loved the start and finish points, and thank you for taking us clockwise around Cootha!"
