Wout Van Aert outsprints Tadej Pogacar to win 2026 Paris-Roubaix

In a breathtaking display of endurance and strategy, Wout Van Aert (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) emerged victorious at the prestigious 2026 Paris-Roubaix, marking a monumental milestone as he clinched his first ever victory in one of cycling's revered cobbled monuments. The race, renowned for its unpredictability and fierce competition, culminated in a dramatic finale at the Roubaix velodrome, where Van Aert outpaced defending champion Tadej Pogacar in a nail-biting sprint.

The race kicked off with an intense 100-kilometer flat section, setting the tone for a tactical battle that would unfold across the unforgiving cobbles. As the peloton jostled for position, the tension was palpable. An average speed of 54 km/h into the first cobbled sector underscored the ferocity of the competition, as riders fought to stay ahead of potential crashes that could turn the tide of their fortunes.

Early skirmishes saw both Van Aert and fellow competitor Mads Pedersen contend with minor mechanicals, yet their resilience shone through as they quickly regained ground. The UAE Team Emirates, led by Pogacar, relentlessly pushed the pace, splitting the peloton as they sought to wear down their rivals. However, chaos struck when Pogacar suffered a puncture with 120 kilometers remaining, forcing him to switch to a neutral Shimano bike—a setback that briefly stalled his formidable momentum.

Despite the challenge, Pogacar's team rallied, bringing him back within striking distance as the race advanced through the challenging Haveluy sector. The drama intensified when Mathieu van der Poel, a key contender, experienced his own puncture during the fabled Arenberg sector, plunging Alpecin into disarray. His struggles opened the door for Van Aert and Pogacar to establish a potent lead group that would shape the outcome of the race.

With teamwork and determination, Van Aert and Pogacar broke away alongside elite competitors Christophe Laporte and Jasper Stuyven. In a strategic move, Van Aert made his decisive attack on Mons-en-Pévèle, with Pogacar quickly bridging the gap. The two riders demonstrated remarkable strength as they forged ahead, leaving behind the remnants of the chasing pack.

As they entered the final kilometers, tensions escalated in the chase for the podium, but all eyes remained on the frontrunners. Van Aert and Pogacar entered the iconic Roubaix velodrome neck and neck, the crowd roaring as they prepared for the final sprint. In a heart-stopping finish, Van Aert unleashed his remaining energy and surged ahead, crossing the line first as Pogacar trailed closely behind.

"This victory is a dream come true," said Van Aert, his voice filled with emotion. "To win Paris-Roubaix, especially in a race that was so unpredictable, is everything I have worked for. The challenges we faced today were immense, but I found strength in my team and my passion for professional cycling."
